Sinochem Lantian Attended the 23rd Meeting of the Montreal Protocol Parties

From November 21st to 25th, the Joint 9th Meeting of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (hereinafter referred to as Vienna Convention) and the 23rd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Ozone-Depleting Substances (hereinafter referred to as Montreal Protocol) took place in Bali, Indonesia. Sinochem Lantian Co, Ltd., (hereinafter referred to as Sinochem Lantian), subsidiary of Sinochem Group, attended both two meetings and actively participated in the heated discussions on relevant issues.

During the meeting, Sinochem Lantian expressed appeals from China’s fluorine chemical industry on proposed amendment to the use of HFCs, feedstock and processing agent management, and phase-out of byproduct emission of HFC-23, etc.

Issues discussed include the evaluation on the Protocol’s financial mechanism, amendment proposal on climate change issues, alternatives to ODS that have high global warming potential (GWP) , non-hazardous management of the ODS stockpiling environment, methyl bromide quarantine and pre-shipment check, carbon tetrachloride (used as processing agent) emission and essential-use exemption, etc. More than 500 representatives and observers from 124 countries, 4 international organizations and intergovernmental organizations and 60 non-governmental organizations attended the meeting.

The Parties to the Vienna Convention meet once every three years and have met 9 times while the Parties to the Montreal Protocol meet each year and have met 23 times. All Parties, including China, have made significant contributions to the protection of ozone layer and reduction of ozone-layer depleting substances and achieved fruitful results. Montreal Protocol is recognized by the international community as the most successful multilateral environmental treaty implemented so far.
